Eye problems

If you are having problems with your eyes, visiting an optician is often the best place to start.

Minor Eye Conditions Service

If you have a recent problem with your eyes such as sore eyes, red eyes or visual disturbance you can be assessed and treated by one of our local Minor Eye Conditions Service.

This is a free NHS service available from several local opticians across South Yorkshire. Please see below for more information of what conditions are covered.

    • Red eye or eyelids
    • Dry eye or gritty and uncomfortable eyes
    • Irritation and inflammation of the eye
    • Significant recent sticky discharge from the eye or watery eye
    • Recently occurring flashes or floaters
    • In growing eyelashes
    • Foreign body in the eye

This is not an eyesight test and does not cover long term conditions for example cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma. You will already be under a hospital eye service or optometrist for this condition.

    Information:

You will be required to book an appointment to use this service, so please telephone your chosen practice first. Appointments are available during normal working hours and some practices offer appointments on a weekend.

Not all practices have an optometrist available every day, but if they do not have capacity they will help to find you an alternative nearby.

If you would like more information and a list of the practices that offer this service, please contact the surgery via the link below and a member of the team will be happy to assist.
