Our practice operates a dedicated Controlled Medication (CD) Review Clinic to ensure the safe and appropriate use of high-risk medicines. This clinic is run exclusively by our Lead GP.
Understanding Controlled Drugs
Controlled Drugs are a class of medication (such as Opioids like Tramadol and Morphine, Benzodiazepines/Z-drugs like Diazepam and Zopiclone, and medications like Gabapentin and Pregabalin) that carry a much higher risk of harm. They are often addictive, and their misuse can be fatal. As a result, they are subject to strict monitoring.
Our Policy and Requirements
- Prescribing Restrictions: Due to their harmful nature, we are very significantly restricted in prescribing these medications in primary care, even when suggested by a specialist.
- Controlled Medication Contract: If you are already taking these medications, you may be required to sign a controlled medication contract outlining the terms of use and monitoring.
- Regular Review: These medications require regular reviews to assess the ongoing need and suitability of the treatment. Our CD Review Clinic provides the necessary support for this assessment and for any structured withdrawal plan.
If you are on a controlled medication, you will be contacted to book an appointment with our Lead GP.
